NREL, or the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is the US governmental agency that is responsible for the government's alternative fuel research. NREL's Biomass Program supports NREL R&D with a focus on biomass characterization?, thermochemical conversion technology?, biochemical conversion technology?, biomass conversion technology?, biobased products? development, and biomass process engineering? and analysis.

NREL also works to develop cost-effective, environmentally friendly biomass conversion technologies to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, improve air quality, and support rural economies.
