The International Energy Agency IEA is an intergovernmental organisation that acts as energy policy advisor to 28 member countries about reliable, affordable and clean energy.

Founded during the oil crisis of 1973-74, the IEA’s initial role was to co-ordinate measures in times of oil supply emergencies. As energy markets changed, the IEA has broadened its mandate to incorporate the “Three E’s” of balanced energy policy-making:
* energy security
* economic development
* environmental protection

Current work focuses on climate change policies, market reform, and energy technology collaboration and outreach to major consumers and producers of energy such as China, India, Russia, the US, and the OPEC countries.

With a staff of around 190, mainly energy experts and statisticians from its 28 member countries, the IEA conducts energy research, data compilation, produces publications and disseminates the latest energy policy analysis and recommendations on good practices to the public.
