GeoSynFuels uses simultaneous saccharification? and solid-state fermentation? to ethanol with potential for producing other biofuels such as biobutanol.

Colorado-based GeoSynFuels is a development company focused on the construction of a continuous-process pilot plant. It has applied for a DOE grant to fund this development. Its goal is to build, own and operate its own facilities.

GeoSynFuels says costs are highly dependent on the feedstocks it is planning on using with the processing routes associated with each feedstock. Two processing routes include:
  • Treating beetle-killed pine? for both hemicellulose and cellulose conversion and fermentation. This route has a projected price of $1.25 per gallon
  • Using waste fiber from municipal solid waste?, and waste paper, which requires no pretreatment. Projected price of less than $1.
