Bioethanol

Also known as ethanol, is an alcohol biofuel with the chemical formula CH3CH2OH that is traditionally produced by the yeast fermentation and distillation of starch or sugar crops. The most commonly produced ethanol in the U.S. is made from corn and is commonly known as corn ethanol. However, other feedstocks can be used to make this first generation ethanol such as sugarbeets, sugar cane, barley and others.

Ethanol can also be produced from other feedstocks such as agricultural residues and biomass crops such as switchgrass. This is known as second generation or cellulosic ethanol. Ethanol can be blended with petroleum for use in vehicles. Grain alcohol.
